By discussing the establishment and changes of the first overseas Chinese school in Korea, Incheon Overseas Chinese Elementary School, this essay examines the principal role of the overseas Chinese education in maintaining and reproducing the interior order within the overseas Chinese community in Korea. The overseas Chinese have been immigrating to the Korean peninsula in history and they have formed an ethnic group based on their identity of the imagined community by living together. The overseas Chinese maintains their unique cultural and political characters through their common community “Chinatown” to highlight their difference from Koreans. Such kind of overseas Chinese community preserves Chinese traditional and intrinsic cultural principles that make the community exist as a “special group” in Korea, in which t he education of t hese Chinese immigrants p lays a k ey r ole. This essay explores the consistence of the overseas Chinese education and community before 1945.
