The regional competitiveness index is one of the most effective ways to understand business situation of regional economy and to describe the conditions of regional development. Moreover, in order to examine more accurate characteristics of regional competitiveness, analyzing the efficiency of regional economy is highly recommended simultaneously. This study aims to analyze the causal relationships between regional competitiveness index and economic efficiency in regional economy. Then, this study estimates economic efficiency in 16 Municipalities and attempts to understand the relationship between the economic efficiency and factors of regional competitiveness index during 11 years using panel data of 16 Municipalities in Korea. First, The average efficiency in CCR model was the highest in the Ulsan area. and next, a high average efficiency is Seoul(0.867), Jeollanamdo(0.784), Daegu (0.713), Gyeongsangbuk-Do(0.707), Gwangju(0.701), respectively. The economic efficiency in the BCC model was the highest in Ulsan, Seoul and Jeju. Second, relative efficiency in CCR model for the regional competitiveness was statistically significant in the factors of the income level, industrial development, human-base and SOC·financial strength excluding the factor of innovative capabilities in the regional economy. The result of the panel analysis shows that the factors of income level, industrial development, human-based have important functions in regional competitiveness. However, the factor of SOC·financial strengths did not contribute to promote regional competitiveness.
