The purpose of this study is to analyze the Korean honorific using by reviewers and submitters of treatises from a sociolinguistic perspective. The data for this paper is the reports of reviewers and submitters written by researchers in the screening process of papers. We described the basic usages and strategies of honorific use in section 2. Section 3 analyzed the differences of hearer honorific use between reviewer and submitter group with statistical methods. In section 4, we interpreted the cause of differences occurred in the use of honorifics. In the process of this analysis, we could observe that there were distinct differences in the use of honorifics of reviewers and submitters. The honorific score of submitters was much higher than that of reviewers. It is the result of the strategic use of honorifics by submitters. The strategy is that ‘speak more politely to the giver or favorer.’ Although the majors of reviewers and submitters are the same and the inclinations and social positions of them are similar, there were qualitative differences in the honorific use between two groups due to the different temporal role relations of them. In the paper screening process, reviewers have power on the publishing decision of submitter’s paper as superiors. But submitters have to be subordinates, so in general they speak more politely than reviewers.
