Soil information systems have been developed since 1980"s in Japan. The first and fundamental soil database, i.e. "Fundamental Soil Suvey for Soil Fertility Conservation" database, was developed in 1980"s. The database contained soil map(1:50,000) data, attribute data set of the mapping unit, and representative pedon data. The second major database of arable land is "Basic Soil - Environment Monitoring Project(Stationary Monitoring) database. For this database, the monitoing survey have been continued since 1979 to present. From 1979 to 1998, the conditions of the arable soils have been monitored each 5 years in a network of about 20,000 fixed points. And also the data of soil characteristics and farming practice of the sites were stored in the database. In addition to them, some databases were also developed in NIAES and other organizations. The soil databases have been used in many studies of agro-environmental issues, for example, water queality, chemical and heavy metal pollution, and global warming etc. For agricultural production, the soil databases have been used in the vairous systems, for example, suitability maps for some crops, field management and decision support system for application of manure and fertilizer.
