Hastelloy B-2 is an improved wrought version of Hastelloy B and has the same excellent corrosion resistance as alloy B, thus particularly well suited for equipment handing hydrochloric acid at all concentration and temperatures including the boiling point. For this study, first principles, density functional theory was employed to investigate reactivities between Hastelloy B-2 and HF(hydrogen fluoride) solutions, in particular, as nickel atoms are substituted into iron and chromium atoms in each layers on the near surface of Hastelloy B-2. In the result of this study, differences involving in the each cases are shown how the surface of Hastelloy B-2 is reacted by HF.
