This paper aims at revealing the modernity of T’oegye (Yi Hwang) by viewing some of his writings through the lens of T. S. Eliot’s poetics. In spite of the remoteness in time and space, T’oegye and Eliot seem to be in a similar vein of thought. First of all, they have a monistic vision of the universe, which sees the world as a unity. Furthermore, their attitude toward art is classical in that it articulates order, propriety and an escape from emotion and personality. The point is that a monistic vision of the world is closely related with classicism in literature, which will help to show the modernity of T’oegye. Explicating how a monistic vision of the world is related with classicism, this paper will also show how such a vision and attitude help to solve the crisis that we now face.
The key concepts that characterize western modernist literature as well as Eliot’s view of classicism are ‘the impersonal theory of poetry,’ ‘the objective correlative’ and ‘the unified sensibility.’ These concepts are essentially classical and deeply rooted in monistic thinking in the sense that they emphasize the unification of subject and object, and thought and feeling, while escaping the overflow of emotion and personality.
In the same sense, for T’oegye, literature is not hostile to the study of principle, which implies the monistic unification of thought and feeling. As he said in many of his writings, his literature is classical in that he accentuates order and the proprieties of the mind whose key concept is already proclaimed in his famous passage, “learning literature lies in the right mind.” Furthermore, he opposed the overflow and exaggeration of emotion, which also evinces his anti-romantic attitude. Some of his writings and poems remind us of Eliot’s theory of poetry,’ which leads us to confirm the modernity of T’oegye’s literature.
