Chomsky (1998, 1999) suggests that expletive there has only u[person] rather than categorial [D]-feature and Chomsky(1999, 2000, 2004, 2005) consistently argues that expletive there externally merges in [Spec, TP] to check the EPP of T. He also suggests that expletive there be a Probe and T be a Goal. This suggestion, however, is problematic in explaining expletive there as an EPP checker. To solve problems with Chomsky’s (2000, 2004, 2005) approach to expletive there, this paper adopts Kim & Lee’s (2004, 2008) proposal that expletive there externally merges in [Spec, vP], not in [Spec, TP], and moves to [Spec, TP] to check the EPP of T, and shows, through the passive expletive constructions, that this sort of Merge satisfies Conditions on Agree in Chomsky (2000), EPP in Chomsky (2004), and the proposal that T should be a Probe and expletive there be a Goal in Chomsky (2005).
