Through The Portrait of a Lady, Henry James indirectly pointed out the socially repressive condition to woman and the contradiction of marriage system in the 19th century in America. This article attempts to retrace Isabel’s ideal and underlying errors to observe the significance of her choice through frustration and alteration of consciousness. As Isabel faces many situations for ‘what to do’ incessantly, she also continues to question herself. This means that woman, as a subject, discovers and defines self-consciousness. In the last part of the novel, readers get incrementally frustrated with Isabel’s decision to return to Rome. However, Isabel does not want to evade the decision made by her own will and seems to attempt a change from the given situation. What is clear is that her will and positive change made by her expanded consciousness requires new interpretation for her return. Therefore, it is necessary to reconsider the meaning of her return.
