The results of two recent investigations of the environmental effects of OceanThermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) systems on the ocean environment are briefly discussed. These efforts are numerically intensive, although they represent modeling at very different spatial and temporal scales. One is a regional study of the evolution of the effluents discharged from a large OTEC plant over a few months, while the other considers the question of global OTEC resources using an Ocean General Circulation Model (OGCM) for the first time. Both works clearly illustrate the challenging nature of OTEC environmental studies.
