This study reviewed the development method of Japanese language behaviors in appointment cancellation conversations which occur quite frequently in everyday life, focusing on opening dialogue, appointment cancellation related dialogue and closing dialogue.
The appointment cancelation dialogue was segmented as ① stage to check the appointment before the cancelation ② implication of cancelation ③ apology according to cancelation ④ provision of reasons to cancel appointment and whether it is concrete ⑤ proposal to cancel the appointment and ⑥ provision of an alternative instead of cancelation.
In the opening dialogue, subject transition was used most frequently. It can be understood as hesitation showing sorriness to the counterpart as well as attracting the attention of the counterpart to the appointment that he needs to cancel at next moment.
Interesting thing in the analysis of appointment cancellation related conversations was that not only the person who tried to cancel the appointment but also his counterpart checked and proposed alternatives such as new dates, days and time. In closing dialogue, it was found that the person whose appointment was canceled by the counterpart used considerate expressions quite often. It can be understood as a conversation style to reduce the burden of the person cancelling the appointment.
It is hoped to enhance the understanding of Japanese language life, the characteristics of their language styles and language culture of Japanese through this study and to minimize misunderstandings occurring from different language expressions and customs in the hetero-cultural communication.
