This paper introduces a new technique of image enhancement for surveillance system using vision image. The histogram equalization method is a common and widespread image enhancement method, which maximizes image contrast. This image contrast enhancement method usually improves the quality of images, but sometimes suffers from visual deterioration caused by excessive histogram modification. In addition, other contrast enhancement methods which improve the conventional histogram equalization method are not appropriate for surveillance system. To overcome the limitation of the conventional image contrast enhancement methods, this paper introduces a new flexible histogram equalization method for surveillance system. This image contrast enhancement method improves the image contrast while preventing excessive loss of color information.
