The effect of PFI mill refining on alpha cellulose content, viscosity, crystallinity and paper mechanical properties of wood, and two different cotton fibers were studied. The results showed PFI mill refining rarely affected the fiber length, viscosity, alpha cellulose, and crystallinity of all those samples. Fibers refined by Valley beater indicate a little reduction in fiber length in comparison with those refined by PFI mill. However, Valley beater refining method also showed almost no changes in the viscosity, alpha cellulose, and crystallinity. There were no differences in tensile strength development by the refining.
