Keijo Imperial University(京城帝?大?)’s first Dean Hahtdori Unokichi(服部宇之助) said KIU’s mission or establishment purpose was research on oriental culture including Chosun and China. However, KIU’s identity should be viewed more as a training of future Chosun intellectuals and bureaucrats who would support Japanese colonial rule in Chosun dynasty. Establishment of Japanese literature lectures based on such KIU’s establishment purpose and identity did somewhat give minority Japanese living in colonial Chosun and few Chosun people some educational opportunities to study modern “national” literature. However, at the same time, as some researchers like Park Gwang Hyun pointed out, such lectures were created in order to transplant Japanese literature which represented imperial Japanese humanities studies in Chosun dynasty. Such analysis about KIU Japanese literature lectures’ identity is appropriate. However, they also need to specify their points. In that sense, I concentrated on Suh Doo Soo who graduated KIU as a Japanese Literature major and worked at current Ehwa Women’s University. By focusing on literary works by one who graduated as a Japanese Literature major, I tried to specify Japanese Literature’s identity. In other words, figuring out identity through real literary works. Eventually, in this manuscript, I clarified KIU Japanese Literature’s identity by considering Suh’s ‘Sakimornouta(防人歌)’. In other words, imperial Japan wanted to train some Chosun people who could transplant discussion about Japanese literature produced in ‘naichi(?地)’ to colonial Chosun through translation. In that sense, Japanese literature classes were created in KIU.
