The paper is to examine major weaknesses of literature classes and suggest more effective and innovative ways of teaching Shakespeare in Korean English classes. The number of Shakespeare classes in Korean university education has been drastically decreasing because of changed educational environment, such as undervalued literary classics and out-of-date teaching methods. The typical literature courses on Shakespeare works have focused on intensive readings and critical views of the text. This obstinate style of literature teaching has been mismatched with students’ aspiration and needs for English language proficiency to meet their pragmatic purposes. In contrast, pure English language courses have placed a heavy emphasis on language practices ignoring the social and cultural factors of the target languages. The research suggests teaching methods and model classes to improve Shakespeare classes. Korean Shakespeare classes should be diversified with task-based learning methods and audio-visual materials on Internet sites. The TBL learning method is appropriate to students of our times who are in need of learning motivation and creative thinking. The TBL learning method leads students to accomplish various learner-centered tasks based on Shakespeare plays, which enable students to become familiar with not only the language usage aspects but also in-depth understanding of the texts. Also, audio-visual resources aided by computers could be effective materials to students providing a variety of cultural background and practical use of the target language. Shakespeare classes incorporated in the TBL learning methods with audio-visual materials could be creative and challenging lessons to students in rapidly changing educational environment of information technologies.
