As Byeongjangseol is a book on military science that was compiled by King Sejo, it was published the final edition during the 12th year of King Sejo(1466). King Sejo showed much interest in editing a book on tactics from before ascending the throne, and had ever written directly Byeongjeong(兵政) after having been on the throne. This aimed to contribute to a project of strengthening the national defense in the tactical and theoretical aspect.
The contents in each piece are as follows. In Byeongseol(兵說) that is the starting point, it arranged the principle of operating army, which is based on Inui(仁義:humaneness and righteousness). It systematically suggested mainly the basic virtue of military official as the simple and plain form rather than being abstract. In the following Jangseol(將說), it suggested its type by dividing commander’s personality into 3 grades such as good, fair, poor, thereby having led to voluntary introspection. Yujangpyeon(諭將篇) comprised three pieces of instruction, which had been prepared for encouraging commanders. It primarily asked commanders to make mental attitude strict by being always tense even during peace without overestimating talent. Subsequently in Byeongbeopdaeji(兵法大旨), military science implied to have been loyal to the basic operating system of army, not rare tactics or strategy. Finally in Byeongseol(病說), it arranged those things enough to be trouble in light of the military.
It pointed to a person who is close to sage rather than valiant commander and who disciplines even Confucianism with learning archery and horse-riding. At that time, the work of reorganization was driven including Owije(五衛制, Five Camp System) and Jingwancheje(鎭管體制, garrison-command structure). King Sejo, who had initiated this as well, made it correlated, and aimed to offer opportunity available for advancing to harmony with escaping from arbitrary decision, especially through editing Byeongjangseol. It was compiled in order to pursue harmony and to train a person who has both the pen and the sword.
