Placement tests are considered important because they serve as an initial assessment of student ability level that helps predict student course performance and are thus used as tools for correct course placement. For this reason, researchers have extensively studied whether English learners’ scores on placement tests are related to their academic achievement in the courses they were placed in. However, the repercussions of learners not being appropriately placed have rarely been studied. To fill this gap, the current study compared the effects of TOEIC (the Test of English for International Communication)-based placement and CSAT (College Scholastic Ability Test)-based placement on the GPAs of 2,437 freshman students admitted to a Korean university. A series of quantitative analyses reveal that TOEIC is a better predictor of academic achievement than CSAT and that mismatched studentsthose who would have been placed in different levels according to their TOEIC scores-received significantly lower grades than matched students-those who would have been placed in the same level according to both TOEIC scores and CSAT scores. Interviews with teachers confirmed that mismatched students had lower proficiency levels on average as well as unsuccessful class performance. These findings emphasize the importance of initial placement on students’ attitude towards class throughout the semester and eventually on their academic achievement.
