The goal of this study is to provide an answer to the question as to how characteristics of internet users has made the same information technology and service produce variation in the Internet and SNS use between South Korea and the United States. The focus of analysis is given first to the use of internet service such as SNS use, online writing, online banking and online shopping, then to the effect of smart phone use on the use of internet service. The results showed that the factors determining the Internet and SNS use varied between two countries. First, South Koreans tended to use internet for online writing, while American people tended to use internet for SNS. If gender and educational background were considered, South Korean female is more likely to use internet than South Korean male, and Americans are more likely to use laptop and tablet PC for internet access than other devices. Second, there was little difference in the goal of SNS use as the proportion of people who use internet to maintain existing social relations was highest in both countries. In South Korea, educational level was positively associated with the SNS use to establish new social relations. In the United States, however, educational level was negatively associated with the SNS use to establish new social relations. Finally, the smart phone use had a statistically significant effect on all cases of SNS use, namely to establish and maintain friendship and to gain access to information, giving a priority to mobile circumstance in the internet use. If internet devices are considered, South Korean internet users have moved from desktop PC to mobile internet use based on smart phone, while American internet users still tended to depend on laptop for mobile internet access.

본 연구에서는 한국과 미국의 인터넷 이용자들을 대상으로 동일한 기술과 서비스라고 할 수 있는 인터넷과 SNS의 활용이 개별 국가 및 이용자들의 어떤 특성과 결합하여 상이한 결과로 이어지는지에 대한 비교 연구를 목적으로 한다. 이를 위해 온라인 글쓰기와 SNS 이용, 온라인 뱅킹, 그리고 온라인 구매와 같은 주요한 인터넷 서비스의 이용여부와 SNS 이용의 목적, 그리고 개별적 이용에 있어서의 스마트폰의 활용이 어떤 영향을 미치고 있는지를 분석하였다.
분석 결과를 요약하면, 동일한 기반 기술인 인터넷과 SNS이지만 구체적인 이용에 있어서 영향을 미치는 요소는 국가별로 차이가 나타났다. 한국의 경우 온라인에서의 글쓰기가 매우 활발하게 나타난데 비해 미국은 SNS의 이용이 상대적으로 활발한 양상을 나타내었고, 한국이 학력과 성별에 있어서 여성의 영향이 유의미했던데 비해 미국은 디바이스의 활용 측면인 랩탑과 타블렛 PC의 활용이 의미 있는 영향을 미치고 있었다. SNS의 이용목적에 있어서는 양국 모두 기존의 관계를 유지하는 비중이 제일 큰 것으로 나타났지만, 한국은 미국에 비해 상대적으로 새로운 관계의 형성에도 SNS를 적극적으로 이용하고 있는 것으로 보여진다. 아울러 학력 요소는 양국 모두에 있어서 유의미한 관계를 나타냈지만 한국의 경우에는 학력이 높아질수록, 미국은 반대의 경우에 새로운 관계를 형성하는데 SNS이용이 활발하게 이루어짐을 나타냈다. 또한 스마트폰의 활용은 한국의 SNS의 이용에 있어서 친구관계의 형성과 유지나 정보습득을 위해 이루어지는 모든 경우에 통계적으로 유의미한 양상을 나타내고 있어 모바일 환경의 활용 중요성이 두드러졌다고 보여진다. 인터넷 이용을 위한 디바이스의 변화는 한국이 PC기반의 정주형 인터넷 이용에서 스마트폰 중심의 모바일 환경으로 이동하고 있는데 비해, 미국은 PC와 더불어 인터넷 접속에 중요한 미디어로 활용되고 있었던 랩탑이 아직도 상당부분 모바일 환경에서의 인터넷 이용을 담당하고 있는 것으로 판단된다.
