Despite his remarkable literary talent, Kim Ryu, a.k.a. Bukjeo, never received due attention. It may be his complicated political moves that rendered it difficult to interpret his literary works. He seized political power after the Injo Restoration, but then he ardently supported the alliance with the Qing Dynasty when faced with the second Manchu Invasion in 1636.This was severely criticized by his contemporary intellectuals. Moreover, his mother and wife committed suicide for fear that they might suffer indignity, when Ganghwa Island, in which they sought refuge was invaded by the Qing army. His son, Kim Gyeong-jing, who was in charge of defending Ganghwa Island, fled the Island leaving the royalties behind and survived, but was impeached and executed after the war. Due to such tragic family history, Kim’s later life was filled with anguish and conflicts.
Kim’s Classical Chinese poetry reflected such personal history. However, he did not expose his raw emotions in direct language. Using Tang style poetry, he intricately weaved his emotions with objects, which was an extremely metaphorical method to express his feelings. His mansi, the elegies for the dead, were highly praised by many people. It ran the risk of falling into cliche, but he managed to attain literary achievements by way of Tang style poetry.
Studying Kim Ryu’s literary works will open up new avenues to understand an aspect of Korean literary history during the early seventeenth century. A continued effort to study his official literary works such as epitaphs or the Classical Chinese poems he exchanged with foreign envoys must be carried on.
