In order to optimize a multistage manufacturing process, it is very important to determine the optimal conditions that would result in the maximum performance of the process. Traditionally in the field of process optimization, model-based approach is popularly used. Although the most important task in the model-based approach for optimization of a manufacturing process is to build good model, a good model is not easy to obtain from the multistage manufacturing process data. This paper proposes an alternative procedure using the existing ‘Patient Rule Induction Method’ to optimizing a multistage manufacturing process directly without building a model. An case study in a multistage steel manufacturing process is introduced to illustrate the proposed procedure.
