This study explores a strategy for environmental and sustainable stormwater runoff reduction in cities by analyzing the case study of the Green Infrastructure Plan for New York City. Firstly, Green Infrastructure is a natural system that reduces stormwater runoff through evapotranspiration, infiltration, and restoration which is the way nature handles water. Secondly, Green Infrastructure is a multi-scaled system that is comprised of small-scaled rain gardens, bioswales, green roofs, blue roofs, rain barrels, cisterns, and permeable paving as well as large-scaled natural or green spaces such as forests, rivers, and parks in cities. Thirdly, Green Infrastructure planning is a cost-effective strategy compared to Grey Infrastructure which is composed of costly tunnels, tanks, and extensions. Green Infrastructure planning could cost-effectively reduce stormwater runoff and increase water quality. Forth, Green Infrastructure planning is a decentralized system which is applicable to various types of land use which include buildings, residential areas, open spaces, and streets in cities. Finally, Green Infrastructure planning could provide sustainable environmental, social, and economic benefits which are not provided by Grey Infrastructure.
