Flame flickering has been occurred mainly due to buoyancy force for pool fires under ambient air. The cup burner flame was used to experimentally investigate the effect of oxidizer velocity on the gravitational instability. The results showed that the flickering frequency was decreased with increasing the oxidizer velocity. The frequency- buoyancy relation with non-dimensional variables was coincide with that of buoyant flume and pool fires when the characteristic velocity was defined to the difference between fuel and oxidizer velocities, which implies that the origin of the gravitational instability is Kelvin-Helmholtz instability in shear layer. The effect of oxidizer composition on the instability was also examined by nitrogen dilution in oxidizer stream. As the concentration of inert gas increased, the length of the blue flame was increased and the lift-off behavior was observed. The oscillation frequency was independent of dilution ratio but related to the local flame structure. Also, various instability modes at flame base, cell, swing and rotating, were produced near the extinction limit.
