Situated at the intersection of art history and media theory, This paper focuses on the critical view point for the spatial experience in Jeffrey Shaw’s new media installations. As listed in the title; New media, Installation art, and the spatial experience to form an independent context, while the concepts are closely connected with each other. These elements can be combined in various ways, researchers in new media installation art focus on the mediation that the specific space demonstrates. Jeffrey Shaw’s work aspect reflection is the prime example of such experiences.
In this paper, I consider the works of Jeffrey Shaw in the context of contemporary art and media theory. From the early video installation(1970s’) to a combination of physical space and image space(1980’s), and Virtual Reality(1990’s), Jeffrey Shaw has been experimenting with a variety of media arts. In this process, Jeffrey Shaw works with his work and spectators’ body, the interaction between spaces, and continue to explore and interact with such immersion by design and distancing can be explained by induction to find ourselves in the space experience. Especially, his virtual reality installations offer the new methods and new paradigms which extend the spatial identity of the artworks. And not just in terms of the structure of the image itself, but also in terms of a space of interactions between the virtual image and the spectator’s body. Such a digital conjunction of virtual and actual space evokes a specific ‘tension’. These characteristics of contemporary art, technology and new media culture refers to the point of convergence.
In conclusion, Jeffrey Shaw’s new media installations complex to discuss in the context of contemporary art, it presents the main alternatives. New media installation art space, the experience of physical space and virtual space through the tension between new media culture leads to speculation about behind. This discussion and drawing in a variety of context at the same time is also a description of a very narrow area. Jeffrey Shaw reflects the progressive contemporary art that are important model that will direct the future arts.
