The present study aims to investigate the difference between native English speakers (NES) and native Korean speakers (NKS) in their perception and production of aspiration in English voiceless stops depending on the context: those in the word-initial position and those following /s/. Five NES and twenty NKS read English stimuli containing voiceless stops in both positions. Their production was analyzed in terms of voice onset time (VOT). The subjects were also asked to listen to pairs of stimuli-one with appropriate aspiration and the other with inappropriate aspiration-and respond as to whether the two sounds were different or the same. The results show that NES
distinguished between aspirated stops and unaspirated stops in production but not in perception because the two sounds are allophones in English. On the other hand, NKS discriminated neither in perception nor in production since NKS are influenced by Korean loanword phonology: all English voiceless stops are loaned into Korean as aspirated stops regardless of their original state of aspiration in English.
