This article attempts to investigate the politics of powerlessness in George Orwell’s Coming Up for Air. All of the literary critics agree that Orwell is a political writer as a progressive. But the way of expressing his progressive idea is unique and interesting. In other words, he looks for his progressive idea through the past. The past is a necessary means of seeking the face of the future for Orwell. He tries to search the past in order to find the face of the present and foresee the destiny of the future. This article examines how a narrator and protagonist, George Bowling foresees the bleak face of the future and feels disillusioned through the world of the past in Lower Binfield, where he grew up.
