There is a fair amount of research on the issue of port selection, which has been one of the most popular themes in the maritime and port studies. However, majority of previous literature has dealt with this topic in terms of port level generally focusing on the hub ports as transshipment centers. Eventually, shipping lines have been continuously pursuing the economies of scale by increasing vessel sizes and selectively calling at a limited number of global mega ports or regional hub ports, which are, in sequence, connected with a large number of peripheral feeder ports. Under the recently changing maritime environment, feeder container terminals need to strategically define their positions as the competitors and simultaneously cooperators of nearby feeder terminals and also hub ports. The present study attempts to investigate and extract terminal selection factors regarding feeder container terminals, which have not yet been examined with deep perceptions. In addition, by adopting proposed factors, preference structure among the sampled four feeder container terminals located in the Incheon Port and the Pyungtak Port are explored in order to present the utility of feeder terminal selection factors suggested in this study.
