In exporting and importing cargo through the port, a port operation is a major asset to maritime freight businesses, shipping agencies, businesses related to transportation, and suppliers of goods. The roles that the port of Gwangyang plays and its contributions to the development of the city are quite immense. With this thesis, the changes of the civic consciousness are analyzed. The benefits of Gwangyang citizens are taken into consideration in relation to the developments of the port of Gwangyang. More women than men, more farmers than workers from other industries, and more of the Pohang Iron and Steel Company"s employees and affiliates than members of any other group highly anticipate the future competitiveness of Gwangyang port. Using SPSS for the factor analysis, two common considerations are extracted: one is administrative services and the other is enterprise. Thus far, this study has been limited. The only survey that has been performed focused on residents that reside in Gwangyang city. In a city including a port, the ports can hold varying positions of importance depending on city"s size, and therefore citizens" relationships to the port are unique to each port. In future studies, if the same examination were to be performed on other port cities, the citizens" relationships with those port industries could be compared to the relationships of the citizens of Gwangyang city with its port industries. Also, inquiries regarding the competitiveness of Gwangyang port compared with other ports and potential for the future improvement of the Gwangyang port should be asked of people who have relevant professional knowledge about the port.
