Located in the heart of the country, Chungbuk is likely to evolve into National logistics center. But Chungbuk has not the systematic logistics plan so far, because they do not have Transportation and Logistics DB. herefore this study deals with fright movement and logistics cost of Chungbuk.
The results of this study can be summarized as follows :
In Chungbuk, road fright volume is small, but railway fright volume is highest in the country. And this study analyzed the status of the regional freight movement. As a result, most cargo of Chungbuk is moved by Daejun, Chungnam region, and most cargo is coming from Kyungki, Seoul, Inchun region.
We estimated the local logistics costs for Chungbuk in 2008 and analyzed changes and trends with regard to various categories of logistics costs. The scope of this analysis includes transportation, storage and inventory, packaging, stevedoring, as well as logistics information and administration cost, for the period between 2003 and 2008.
The logistics cost of Chungbuk amounted to 6.243 trillion won for the year 2008, average annual growth rate is 10.21%. This corresponds to 3.42% of the national logistics cost size, 20.75% of the GRDP that year. Transportation accounts for the largest share in the logistics costs, and stevedoring accounts for the smallest share in the logistics costs.
The unit-logistics costs (per ton) and the unit-transportation costs (per ton-㎞) were 63,884 won and 990 won, respectively. This results appeared higher than the national logistics costs.
The logistics problems of Chungbuk are low competitiveness due to excessive logistics costs, inefficiency of logistics networks, lack of responsiveness of green logistics, inefficient transportation system, and so on. We propose various policies to reduce logistics costs, establishment of logistics facilities feature, introduction of green logistics system, transportation connections among logistics facilities, etc as the policy direction for logistics of Chungbuk
We should proceed the research about methodology for calculating local logistics costs for the next step. However this paper is expected to be used as indirect materials when Chungbuk-Do develop a logistics policy, because there is no available data about logistics currently.
