This research was carried out to provide effective exercise method and rehabilitation program for the elderly suffering from degenerative arthritis. Based on a subject of female elderly over 65 and under 70 years old, and suffering from degenerative arthritis, it measured gait function and pain according to groups divided into aquarobic, swimming and control groups, and exercised for 12 weeks with 60 to 70% of maximal heart rate. The results of this study are as follows. In body composition change after 12 weeks exercise program, aquarobic group showed significant increase (p<.001) of lean body mass after 6 weeks more than before exercise. Body fat significantly decreased (p<.001) after 12 weeks exercise more than before exercise and 6 weeks exercise in the aquarobic and swimming exercise. BMI significantly decreased (p<.001) post-exercise more than pre-exercise, and increased in the control group. In change of gait function, average step length showed significantly increase (p<.001) after 12 weeks exercise in aquarobic group compared with pre-exercise. Swimming group showed increase in the average step length, however, there was no significantly difference. Control group showed decrease on it. In cadence, aquarobic group showed significantly increase (p<.001) after 6 and 12 weeks exercise more than before exercise.

In the change of pains, aquarobic group showed significantly decrease pains in the morning after 12 weeks exercise, compared with pre-exercise and 6 weeks exercise. Pains after exercise significantly decreased after 12 weeks exercise, compared with pre-exercise and 6 weeks exercise, and control group showed increase on it.
