The objective of this paper is to carry out a comparative study cf on-bottom stability md find out differences between design codes. Two (2) design codes were used for on-bottom stability analysis of subsea pipelines. Conventionally, DNV-RP-E305 ""On-Bottom Stability Design of Submarine Pipelines"" published in October 1988 was used in order to calculate required concrete thickness. DNV also published another design codes, DNV-RP-F109, for on-bottom stability in October 2003. Because cf the many uncertainties in the new codes, both cf these two codes were widely used for the offshore pipeline projects. Pipeline design engineer should understand the different methodology and criteria in ike two (2) codes. Environmental loads acting on subsea pipeline is calculated using several parameters such as wave/current velocity and drag/inertia confident A significant wave is used for DNV-RP-E305, but a maximum wave with reduction factor derived from pipe embedment and sail resistance is used in DNV-RP-F109. Case studies with various parameters were performed to find out the reasons of the different analysis results. Wave dominant cases and current dominant operation conditions were also considered in this study. Results varies significantly depending on the environmental and soil parameters. The required concrete thicknesses of DNV-RP-F109 are generally conservative than those of DNV-RP-E305.
