This study recovered patriotic army leader Kim Gae?guk’s life and thought that have been buried in history. Kim Gae?guk is a patriotic army leader who rendered meritorious services during the Japanese invasion in 1592 by checking the Japanese army’s advance to Juk?ryeong Pass. However, there is not much information on his activities as a patriotic army leader or records about his life. It is because he did not leave any writing describing his own deeds. This may be partially because of his character as evidenced by the fact that he refused to be honored as a patriotic army leader for serving his parents despite his outstanding abilities and was content with using his talents later under the command of Kim Reuk. Because of his preference of being an assistant to being a leader, few historical records about him have been left at present.
Kim Gae?guk is worthy to be remembered as an official who, as Mokmingwan, worked hard to reform localities suffering the aftereffects of the wars with Japan in 1592 and 1599. However, his term as a local official was merely about two years and his position was not higher than Dosa and Gunsu. His government service was too short to exercise his abilities fully.
During peace times, on the other hand, Kim Gae?guk was quite generous and filial to his parents. Concerning his filial piety to his parents, no one was comparable to him. What is more, he always treated others from their position. His word and deed were exemplary to everybody, and his scholarship and conduct deserved of being called a man of virtue. Nevertheless, he did not take pride in his talents nor seek a secular fame and, therefore, his footprints are not conspicuous compared to his abilities. For this reason, many people lamented his short life, saying that he died too early, although he lived until the age of 56, not a short life.
