This article examines the changes in party politics in old and new democracies based on the multidimensional approach disaggregating the political party into three dimensions, that is, party-as-organization, party-in-public office, and party-in-the-electorate. Although the party decline thesis emphasizes the weakening of the political party in general, it is found that despite the considerable shrinking of party-as-organization combined with the ascendency of party-in-public-office, party-in-the-electorate in old and new democracies has remained rather resilient. Nonetheless, it is necessary to further reinforce party-in-the-electorate so that the political party can overcome its increasing alienation from civil society. In this context party of the electorate is suggested as an alternative party model strengthening party-in-the-electorate by allowing party supporters and party voters to participate in intraparty decision-making, most importantly candidate selection.
