Gujeong 毬庭 in the Goryeo Dynasty has been recognized as a Gyeokgu (polo) court, although it was a large space for various national ceremonies and events such as Buddhist ceremonies and ritual observances. This recognition was originated from the Chinese character, ‘gu’ 毬, which means Gyeokgu. The Junggyeongji also shows a record of this. According to the History of Goryeo, however, there is no record of Gyeokgu in Gujeong. And the Imhapilki states that the reason the court was called Gujeong related to the shape of the court, which looked like a ball. It was impossible to ride a horse on in Gujeong. This means that Gujeong was not the place for Gyeokgu but just a ball-shaped court for morning meetings.
Gujeong was not a place for playing Gyeokgu, but for national rituals. The meaning of ‘gu’ in Gujeong was not only the round shape, but also the symbolic meaning of the center of the world. There were several Gujeongs what were built in Seogyeong and Donggyeong as well as Gaegyeong located in Songdo. Gujeongs were established in both the Seokyeong and Dongkyeong regions in order to succeed the legitimacy of the Goguryeo and Silla dynasties. Gujeong in the Goryeo Dynasty was a place that symbolized the royal legitimacy, integrating and realizing the national order.
