Jesus is neither a teacher, a Rabbi, who implants rigid doctrines and morals in people"s mind, a prophet who conveys God"s messages, nor an emancipator, a political Messiah, who frees Israel from Roman reign. Jesus is the one who fills all these three roles, but more than those. He invites people, in place of God, to the Kingdom of God and gives them eternal salvation.
For this ministry Jesus has revealed Himself in various ways: by preaching, acting or doing miracles, and in the end by His crucifixion and the Resurrection.
A common factor of all these appearances of Jesus is His perspective that is different from the world"s. It is no other than the Perspective of God. In this article I try to research it in the perspective of humor.
Jesus challenges hypocrisy, desperation and limits of people with humor, and invites them to a humble passive being. His ultimate value is not a worldly one. Therefore he is not discouraged in the face of obvious failure. At the Last Supper with His disciples in despair, He expressed His deep joy through the reference, “In this world you have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world"(John 16:33, NIV).
Into the worldly absurdity, inconsistency and despair comes His grace as contradiction, and as a method to change it to a hope Jesus take a humorous perspective. In the parable of “the good Samaritan," the hearers experienced God"s contradictory Grace by the humorous factors and got an eschatological hope. For the purpose of it Jesus mobilized, like a comic savant, humourous rhetoric methods to upset the values, religions, ideologies, norms etc. which were consolidated in the society at that times. It was not a simple ridicule or mockery but a Divine Laugh inviting people to the Kingdom of God, and giving God"s Grace and eschatological hope.
