Paul de Man"s rhetorical reading is the process of negating a grammatical reading that produces meaningful senses. Making senses implies apprehending and comprehending the phenomena derived from the combination of senses and mind. For de Man, the grammatical reading is the delusion as the effectiveness of language.
The purpose of de Man"s reading is to deviously reveal the pure formality of language as the material construct, infratext that allows figural language to operate. To present the state, two readings are requested. One is the grammatical one that presupposes the relationship of the extra-linguistic to language and the other the rhetorical reading that is limited within the intra-linguistic. The level of revealing the materiality of language deviously is in the latter in which some symptoms such as contradiction, undecidability, literalization and tautology are developed. Paul de Man, however, argues that the former is the necessary process to reach the latter. This writing examines the process mentioned above by reading romantic poetry and also attempts to critically read the materiality of language.
