The purpose of this study is to identify the factors that affect performance of public medical centers (PMCs). The performance of a PMC is measured by the number of inpatients, the number of outpatients and the operating margin. The independent variables that affect these performance measures include the general characteristics (the location of PMC, the number of local population, the number of years of operation, the number of medical specialty, the number of beds), the characteristics of employee (the number of medical doctors, the number of nurses, the number of medical technicians, and the number of administrative staffs), and the patient mix (the number of inpatients and the number of outpatients). The data for the analysis were collected from the financial statements in the annual reports of the PMCs.
The results showed that the location of PMC and the number of specialty had statistically significant effects on the number of outpatients. The number of local population, the number of beds, the number of nurses were significantly affecting the number of inpatients. Finally, the operating margin was significantly affected by the types of hospital, the number of nurses, outpatient, and inpatients. Based on the results the managerial implications were discussed.
