This study investigated the extent to which suffix type and phonological opacity accounted for variance on morphological awareness and stress perception and production in the three types of morphological derivatives: derivatives with neutral suffixes (able, ment), transparent derivatives with non-neutral suffixes (ity, ence) and opaque derivatives with the same non-neutral suffixes. It also explored the extent that morphological awareness and stress perception and production showed variance with one another. Stress in the bases and derivatives was compared, looking into the relationship between them. This study found that the participants’ morphological awareness of the neutral derivatives was significantly better than that of the non-neutral derivatives. Their stress accuracy in the non-neutral derivatives was better in both perception and production than that in the neutral derivatives. The participants performed better on the non-neutral transparent derivatives than the opaque counterparts across morphological awareness and stress perception and production. The precedence relationship of stress perception over production did not find a variance dependent on suffix type and phonological opacity. The bases and derivatives did not have significant differences in stress perception, while significant differences were found in stress production. Founded on these results, implications were suggested for the teaching of English stress in morphological derivatives.
