This paper investigates the underlying structures of two different types of input formats in a web-based listening test. A web-based listening test was designed based on two input format conditions: input preview and no input preview. To examine whether those formats measured the same listening construct, structural equation modeling (SEM) was employed. Among three hypothesized models (a three sub-skill model, a two sub-skill model, a single trait model), a three sub-skill factor model containing three latent variables: ‘Main idea’, ‘Detail’, and ‘Inference’ was optimal in representing the data in both format groups. Additionally, multi-group analyses were conducted to examine whether underlying structures were equivalent across formats. The results for the test of measurement and structural invariance revealed that underlying structures of the three sub-skill construct were equivalent across two input formats. Discussion and implications are discussed.
