The present study investigates a case of bilingual education conducted in the Korean and English languages alternatively by periods for teaching mathematics to elementary school children. Participants in the study were twenty-nine first-grade students and their parents in an elementary school in Incheon. Bilingual classes were videotaped for the qualitative analysis, and surveys and interviews were conducted to get participants" opinions and attitudes. Children were regularly asked to test themselves in the areas of communicative competence and mathematics competence to find out their accomplishments in English and mathematics through the bilingual education. Result from the surveys and interviews indicated that the bilingual mathematics teaching had positive effects on children"s affective factors of the interest, confidence, and class participation as well as on English speaking and listening. Result from the written test and performance tests also showed that there were positive effects on learning contents of mathematics. Based on the findings some suggestions are made for the implementation of bilingual education in elementary schools.
