Gestures play a significant role in interpersonal communication (Mehrabian & Ferris, 1967). However, some discrepancy exists in the literature as to its significance and purpose. This study investigates gestures’ role as being compensatory or integrative in task completion of EFL speakers. Two groups of subjects described multiple object arrangements, designed to elicit iconic and spatial gestures. The control group had the advantage of using gesture as a communicative tool, while the experimental group could not. Types and frequency and accuracy of gestures were compared between the two groupings. The results indicated that subjects who could see their interlocutor used gesture as a communicative tool, and were also more accurate in task completion. These findings support the hypothesis that gesture serves a compensatory role in nonnative speaking populations. Implications of the findings are discussed with their effect on teaching gestures as a communicative strategy in L2 learning.
