Metaphysic couldn"t maintain its position with the development of modern science. Kant and Hegel also witnessed the crisis of metaphysic, and so tried to reconstruct the traditional metaphysic. Kant criticized the traditional metaphysician argued for the theoretical knowledge of the transcendental being. He distinguished general metaphysic from special metaphysic, and metaphysic of nature from metaphysic of moral. On the basis of distinction, he tried to go toward the soul, freedom, and god with which special metaphysic had relations. He tried to deal with them not through theoretical reason but through practical reason. Therefore Kant tried to solve the problems of special metaphysic with the metaphysic of moral. But Hegel said that Kant"s metaphysic based on the transcendental logic fell into the empty formalism. He turned the transcendental logic of Kant into the dialectic logic, and synthesized the system of reflection as the basic logic prior to metaphysic and the system of reason as the logic going toward metaphysic through the speculative philosophy. He tried to synthesize dialectically the traditional metaphysic arguing the correspondence between thought and being and Kant"s metaphysic emphasizing the discrepancy between them. But Thomists and Kantians criticized that Hegel"s metaphysic couldn"t escape from the faults of the dogmatic metaphysic owing to denying of the transcendental character of being. Kant and Hegel tried to overcome the crisis of the earlier metaphysic in the viewpoint of reflection philosophy. However Kant tried to reconstruct metaphysic on the basis of the transcendental philosophy, and Hegel tried to reconstruct metaphysic on the basis of the speculative philosophy. The relation between Kant and Hegel is not the development proceeding from the former to the latter, but each of them is going the other way.

근대 과학의 발전과 더불어 형이상학은 그 학문성을 의심받게 되었다. 칸트와 헤겔은 형이상학이 위기에 처한 상황을 목격하면서 전통 형이상학을 새롭게 재건하려고 하였다. 칸트는 전통 형이상학처럼 초월적인 존재에 대해서까지 이론적으로 접근하는 것을 거부하였다. 그는 형이상학을 일반 형이상학과 특수 형이상학, 자연 형이상학과 윤리 형이상학으로 구분하였다. 그는 이와 같은 바탕 위에서 기존의 특수 형이상학이 다루었던 영혼, 자유, 신에 대해서 이론 이성이 아닌 실천 이성을 통해 접근하고자 하였다. 그래서 그는 특수 형이상학의 영역을 윤리 형이상학을 통해 풀고자 하였다. 그러나 헤겔은 선가험적 논리학에 기초하고 있는 칸트의 형이상학도 공허한 형식주의에 매몰되어 있음을 지적한다. 그는 칸트의 선가험적 논리학을 변증법적 논리학으로 전환하고, 형이상학에 선행하는 기초논리로서의 ‘반성의 체계’와 형이상학에 도달하는 논리로서의 ‘이성의 체계’를 종합하는 사변철학을 마련하려고 하였다. 그는 사유와 존재를 일치시키려고 한 전통 형이상학과 이들 사이의 불일치를 강조한 칸트의 형이상학을 변증법적으로 종합하려고 하였다. 그러나 토마스주의자들과 칸트주의자들은 헤겔의 이런 입장이 존재의 초월성을 거부하고 이를 내재화함으로써 오히려 독단 형이상학이 범한 잘못으로부터 자유롭지 못함을 지적한다. 칸트와 헤겔은 기존의 형이상학의 위기를 반성철학적 관점에서 극복하려고 한 점에서는 서로 입장을 공유하지만, 각기 선가험 철학과 사변철학에 입각하여 형이상학을 새롭게 구축하려고한 점에서는 입장을 달리하고 있다. 칸트의 형이상학과 헤겔의 형이상학은 전자로부터 후자로의 발전이 아니라 서로 다른 길로 향해 있다.
