The aim of this article is to understand the mission theology of Ramon Llull (1232-1316) and to explore the possibility of dialogue between his theology of mission and Islamic Sufism. The method of this article is to examine two parts-context and text. The context is about Ramon Llull’s historical background and the text is one of the Ramon Llull’s writings.
The life, thought and writings of missionary Ramon Llull were influenced by the context of his time: Spain’s Reconquista, the missionary works of Franciscan and Dominican orders, and the crusades in the late of the Middle Ages in Europe. It is true that there were two differences between Islam and Christianity in medieval Spain - “Reconquista” and “Convivencia”. Both concepts reflect the facts of life in Catalan Majorca, the birthplace of Ramon Llull. Ramon Llull was a notable figure for his special sense in the use of Christian and Islamic mysticism to communicate each other.
In the first part, the historical background of Ramon Llull is examined. After the examination of the historical background, this paper attempts to analyze one of Ramon Llull’s works, which is the Book of the Lover and the Beloved. Ramon Llull was familiar with the contemporary Islamic religious tradition and thought. He appropriated the rhetoric of Islamic mysticism, sufism and tried to explain the Christian doctrines. The Book of the Lover and the Beloved gives the readers the chance to think about the non-polemical dialogue in Muslim and Christian relation.
In conclusion, this paper is intended to find the another approach to Islamic mission in medieval period through Ramon Lull’s writings and also to consider various dialectic methods for sharing Christian faith with other religion.
