Objective: The aim of this study is to understand human upper limb movements in the context of service providing. Background: As the market for service robot is growing rapidly, interactions, especially physical contacts between human and robot need to be studied. This study focused on analyzing human motion to clarify the characteristics of upper limb movement in the given context. Method: Movie clips including scenes of upper limb movements in service providing (restaurant and heath care) were analyzed using therblig, and also the movement were observed and assessed by the relative amplitude of joint angles between links, and by the characteristics of a physical contact if exists. Results: We found (1) the distributions of observed number of therbligs were different by the service domain. (2) people mostly uses their wrist joint among wrist, elbow, and shoulder, (3) intended contact were mostly observed in ventral side, whereas unintended contacts, although it happen occasionally, were observed in the dorsal area.
