This article pays attention to the cause of Gobongs ‘rustication’ in his later years, and explores the meaning of life and philosophy. ‘Rustication’ is part of his life, but forms a trace in the layers of his life time. The wholeness of accumulated life and times recalls old memories. His rustication was directly originated by the political conflict with other ministers. However, in essence, it means his ‘justification of fidelity5 or Nationalization of loyalty’ was frustrated by the irrationality of his times. Such loss of moral philosophical value causes moral sorrow and grief. However, the emotional context of frustration, loss and grief prepared a possibility of overcoming the reality. Gobong started a study to ‘find out himself, which is his ‘life-long dream’, Finally he could find the essence of his life.
This study tries to find what Gobong attempted to realize in the realities of his time as a scholar and bureaucrat before and after his ‘rustication’ period. And, it also examines what made him get frustrated and despair and what kind of philosophical base of grief and sorrow he had. By figuring out his philosophical matters and speculation in his later period, it may elucidate what he actually sought in the truth of life and what is the essence of his Neo-Confucianism. In this paper, I will read a layer of Gobong’s philosophy through the process or lire, which is rustication.
