Objective: The objective of this study is to analysis the effect of shoulder and elbow flexion angles in the standing and sitting on the maximum grip strength. Background: The American Society of Hand Therapists(ASHT) suggested a standardized testing protocol in which the subject should be seated with the shoulder adducted and neutrally rotated, the elbow flexed to 90° and the forearm and wrist in a neutral position. Method: The study evaluates 24 coordination postures with the shoulder flexion levels of 0°, 45°, 90°, and 135° and elbow flexion levels of 0°, 45°, and 90° in standing and sitting positions with the subjects of 40 university students. Results: Grip strength was shown to be stronger in the case of standing posture compared with sitting posture, which was statistically significant. There was no statistically significant difference in the analyses on the elbow and shoulder angles as well as other interaction effects. Conclusion: The coordination with the shoulder angle of 0° and elbow angle of 0° in the standing posture is an optimal posture in measuring the level of grip strength that the study suggests. Application: The results of this study will help to preventing musculoskeletal diseases and improving task efficiency.
