In 1980, Butler introduced a model of tourist area life cycle based on the business concept of product life cycle. It has been regarded as one of the most representative models ever. This model states that a tourist area has changed over a time because of a changeable variety of factors such as needs of visitors, gradual deterioration, and possible replacement of natural attractions and old facilities. As a result, the tourist area experiences six stages: exploration, involvement, development, consolidation, stagnation, and decline or rejuvenation.
Therefore, this study applies Butler’s model to Inchon where it is one of the most popular tourism destinations in Korea. Inchon consists of three major tourist areas: old down town (Chinatown), Songdo, and Kanghwa-do. The survey thinks of old downtown as a stage of rejuvenation, Songdo as that of involvement, and Kanghwa-do as that of decline.
Even though Butler’s model is old, it is meaningful that it is the first time to classify a Inchon’s tourist areas by using it. It is expected to take the further researches profoundly by Butler’s model, which has illustrated important implications on the planning and management of tourist resources.
