Regime transformation after the Cold War has been linked to personal or group interests under a certain communist regime, with some scholars arguing it leads to the western style of democracy and others claiming it creates something different. This article offers an imagination, based upon the assumption that moral norms of the regime is the underlying cause for regime transformation, about the more just and more peaceful regime transformation.
Moral norms construct morally good character and right behaviours in the regime. Throughout the history, they has been used to foster favorable outcomes of the leaders, not of the people in the regime. That is why there are always possibilities of hypocrisy. This hypocrisy loses the leaders’ power and leads to regime transformation as it is revealed, by undercutting their legitimacy. Then, how could we imagine a transformation to a totally new regime, which is just and peaceful, when we always have to suspect our leader’s hypocrisy? Is not it just circulatory?
To answer that question, this article broadens the scope of the regime transformation research, suggesting a meeting place for social science and theology. Social science is helpful for us to understand our problems in this world, but it has its limits of imagining the future. Whereas, theology gives us hope and imaginations for the better future with God, the Kingdom of God, though many times the outcomes of the theological research do not seem very concrete as those of social science do. In this regards, this article argues that social scientific research can show us the limitation of moral norms constructed by human beings in just and peaceful regime transformation as theology can give us the possibility of the new imagination in it, which is the image of god.
