In a rapidly changing society, the writer tries to formulate a Christian theology that can ground a genuine transformation of church and society. According to him, conservative theologies are biblically based. They promote internal transformation and personal sanctification, but they have been less effective at promoting the transformation of society. By contrast, progressive churches do much better at advocating for those about whom Jesus spoke: the poor, the oppressed, the victims of violence, and those who suffer. Yet for some reason progressives have trouble moving from Jesus’ examples to fully worked out Christian theologies.
In this divided setting, we Christian theologians need to focus on some central features of Jesus’ teaching and actions to do theology in an integral way. What we see in and through the life of Jesus is a radical call to inner and outer transformation. This unexpected, even astonishing gospel teaches about a topsy-turvy God and an upside- down ethic. This is the God of kenosis-the God who empties himself in order to take on the form of a servant and suffer the humiliation of the cross. A kenotic theology leads inevitably to an ethic of reversal, because it is God who “has brought down rulers from their thrones but has lifted up the humble.” When Christians affirm this kenotic theology, they turn the church inside-out. In this article, the writer suggests a possible way to transform church and society by transforming a Christian theology based on Jesus’ life and teaching in the Bible.
