Aristotle defined pathos as the feelings that change men as to affect their judgement. In the postmodern society pathos takes the most dominant position in influencing our judgement over logos, ethos. It is because the postmodernity is characterized by the collapse of the Enlightenment project based on reason. Freud and Lacan explained human mental life in terms of drive and desire. Drive is the constant, steady and continual force blindly searching for pleasure for the sake of pleasure. Desire for them is defined as nothing other than the never-ending search for the lost object, which is maternal body in the order of the real. But such a desire is to be translated into the symbolic order in realizing human desires. What is remarkable about desire is the fact that in the postmodern mass media society it is mediated, stimulated, induced, commercialized, and structured by culture industry fueled by capitalism. Capitalism cannot survive with desire, which creates the illusory fascination with commodities: desire regulates our beliefs, ideas, and social practices. Producers in media industry provide various programmes in order to construct audience’s fantasy to desire some commodities. 〈Secret Garden〉 and 〈The Utmost Love〉, Korean soap operas televised recently, showed such fantasy scenarios to create symbolic desire, while arousing sensational responses. Alain Badiou names such phenomena passion for the real. This passion is the most dominant pathos in the postmodern society. Culture industry features aesthetic admiration and the pursuit of pleasure. It encourages the individuals to worship false and artificial images in fantasy form. Lacan emphasized that it is fantasy that sustains our sense of reality. The passion for the real is a correlative to the virtualization of our daily lives. We live in more and more artificially constructed world. And it urges us to regain the depth of the “real reality.” The problem is that it can never be integrated into our reality. This paper concludes that the postmodern passion is the duplication of semblance(simulation), which duplicates realities in the form of semblance.
