This paper aims to trace the particular ways in which Robert Browning engages the ethical and political challenges of the Victorian period, an age in rupture. The critique of subjectivity is one of the great motifs of Browning, who refutes the belief that the essence of the human is interior to the individual, whether called by religiously inflected names such as soul, and spirit or philosophically oriented terms such as self and mind. Strategically employing the form of dramatic monologue, Browning puts this interiorized subject on trial, problematizing the truth claims and sincerity of human consciousness. He focuses on the way this interiorization privileges the masculine and the figurative, which erases, even murders the feminine and the corporeal. In opposition to the sterile and violent subject as consciousness, Browning locates the free-floating desire and corporeality of embodied subject, breaking the boundaries between self and the other, culture and nature, and mind and body. The rebellion of the body, however, cannot lead to the creation of a new social space and ethics. The body and the desire produced by it are already materially supported by society they are born into so that corporeal subjectivity is always in danger of being sexualized and displayed for the pleasure legitimized in the very society.
