In this article the author intends to critically examine the thesis that it is more important to seek the possibility of peaceful coexistence between North and South Korea rather than unification. First, the article inspects the bases for advocating the separation of nationalism and democracy, as well as the distinction between unification and peaceful coexistence, which emerged after the 90"s. Second, the article points out that the perspective which places priority on peaceful coexistence is related to an incorrect stance regarding national solidarity, which in turn is a source of social integration in the modern nation-state. Furthermore, the article elaborates on the special characteristics of nationalism, as a source of social solidarity that cannot be replaced by the universal principles of justice. Based on this explanation, the author asserts the possibility of combining national issues with peace issues.
